Sociocultural and economic factors that contribute to the emergence of sicariato in Ecuador: A comparative analysis

Abstract

Hit men, characterized by contract killings carried out by hitmen, have become a worrying phenomenon in Ecuador. This extreme form of violence has generated a general sense of unease and terror throughout society. However, it is essential to understand the sociocultural and economic factors that contribute to the emergence and persistence of this problem in order to address it effectively. In this research project, an exhaustive examination of these elements will be carried out in the context of Ecuador. We will investigate the role of gangs, organized crime, socioeconomic inequality, and the lack of opportunities in the growth of hit men. In addition, it will examine how the glorification of violence, social norms and culture can help make this type of violence accepted and normalized. The results of this study will serve as a solid foundation for creating and enacting laws that effectively discourage and combat contract killings in Ecuador. In addition, it will contribute to the development of academic and scientific knowledge on this phenomenon, improving the already existing body of literature and offering suggestions for comprehensive solutions.
