External sector of ecuadorian fishing activity: An econometric analysis

ABSTRACT
This research aims to study the fishing economy in Ecuador between 1978 and 2024. Using a documentary, exploratory, and ex post facto research design, it presents the behavior of fish catches (landings), industrial production in the fishing sector, the behavior of fishery exports, and their participation or contribution to total export efforts. The objective is to establish statistical relationships between the variables and provide input for the formulation of sector policies. The results demonstrate an expansion of the sector starting in the second half of the last decade of the 20th century, with the strengthening of aquaculture practices and the export-oriented fishing industry. However, the econometric model does not achieve statistical significance for all the analyzed parameters, suggesting the inclusion of variables such as the real exchange rate or factors involved in external demand. Overall, the study suggests that strengthening the Ecuadorian fishing sector could contribute to improving its integration into international markets through investments in research and development, practices that encourage aquaculture activity, as well as greater private investment in physical capital.
